Description:
The Beacon is an independent day school for boys aged 3 to 13 years. As a preparatory school, we prepare boys for secondary education through a curriculum that offers both richness and diversity of opportunity. From the very earliest steps in initial learning, to independent success in competitive examinations our priority is to ensure a sound academic development, within a happy and stimulating community.
Sustainable development is a way of thinking about how we organise our lives and work – including our education system – so that we don’t destroy our most precious resource, the planet.
Sustainable development means inspiring people in all parts of the world to find solutions that improve their quality of life without storing up problems for the future, or impacting unfairly on other people’s lives. It must be much more than recycling bottles or giving money to charity. It is about thinking and working in a profoundly different way.
The Beacon Sustainable Education Programme endeavours to raise awareness of sustainability amongst the boys, parents, staff and the local community. It does this by being embedded throughout the curriculum in all subjects and in all year groups. The focal point of the year is Green Week when a singular effort is made to concentrate the activities.
